The Intercoastal Waterway Canal in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is another great spot for  watching the tug boats with their barges or fishing. The canal parallels Hwy 180 East. This interstate highway made of water can have a lot of traffic at times. The boats come in all sizes.

The idea for the canal system was introduced be Albert Gallatin in 1808 but wasn't authorized by Congress until 1919. The Gulf Intercoastal Waterway runs from Brownsville, Texas, to Carrabelle, Florida.  A distance of about 1050 miles. The other segment of the Intercoastal Waterway System is the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway which runs from Key West, Florida to Boston, Massachusetts. They both connect to many other navigable waterways. It is one of the wonders of the Alabama Gulf Coast.
