On August 17 - August 20, 2006 The Gulf Coast Powerboat Association presented Thunder on the Gulf in Orange Beach Alabama. This was the forth year for the race. The founder of the Gulf Coast Powerboat association Gary Nichols, a resident of Orange Beach, competed in the race. Thousands of people flooded into the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach area for this annual offshore powerboat race. Seven different classes of boats compete in 3 different races. These boats take two people to operate. One does the steering while the other controls the throttle. It is almost as interesting watching all of the helicopters as it is to watch the boats in the race. Some of them are filming the race but most of them are for safety. They carry specially trained divers ready to go into rescue mode should the need arise. One race fan was over heard saying that it looked like Vietnam. The races are sanctioned by the Offshore Super Series. We hope you enjoy the videos. Dry pit was at The Wharf in Orange Beach, Alabama. |
